For many Haitian students who possess the aptitude to pursue post-secondary education, the road is not only hard but at times inaccessible due to distance and/or monetary reasons. Only 1.1% of the 67% elementary school pupils go on to attend post-secondary school. Not only that, but one of the dangers of this city is the gang violence and insecurity that leads to kidnapping in which university students are targeted.

UCI opened a university with adjacent dormitories in Caïman in 2012 to provide a high standard of Christian-based education that is both practical and affordable. At its opening, many curious onlookers from all over Haiti have visited and 89 students registered.

Building on a biblical foundation, UCI’s vision is to empower, equip and mobilize the next generation of Haitians professionally and spiritually to transform their nation. To appeal to and retain qualified committed Christian professors from Port-au-Prince,
a competitive wage is offered. Since opening in 2012, the university has expanded greatly. It now has over 1,200 students from all over Haiti; 5 dormitories and various housing options; science, nursing, dissection, and computer labs; library; cafeteria; teaching hospital; and many other amenities. The university offers 7 degrees: Theology, Medicine, Biomedicine, Nursing, Agronomy, Elementary Education, and the newest degree:  Computer Science.

With the dismal percentage of Haitians who are able to attend post-secondary school, UCI’s unique university model is meeting one of the nation’s most pressing needs. An educated population will lead to an emerging Haiti. Education is a necessary step in a sustainable reconstruction and development of the country. We believe these educated; Christian leaders are the hope for the future of Haiti. These students are the vision and hope for UCI and Haiti!
